Harmonic Oscillators belongs to Pilar Zeta’s body of speculative instruments: sculptural objects that give physical form to intangible forces such as oscillation, gravity and time. In this series, she approaches oscillation as both concept and material presence, examining the threshold between movement and stillness, geometry and energy, object and field.

The series takes its name from a fundamental model in physics. In classical mechanics, the equilibrium position of a harmonic oscillator represents a state of rest. Quantum mechanics shows otherwise: even at its lowest energy state, the system retains energy and fluctuations. Stillness is never empty; it is saturated with potential.

Taking the resting pendulum as a point of departure, the sculptures examine not motion itself but the condition from which motion arises. Cuspid forms radiate from a central sphere, which marks the zero point. Around it, form behaves less like matter than a field.

Each work draws on a different reference. Some come from physics, such as gravitational lensing, the bending of light by gravity seen in the Einstein Cross. Others come from the natural world: the orchid, the thorn and the bone, geometries that repeat across vastly different scales. Together, the sculptures occupy a register between fossil and instrument.

The series comprises four smaller sculptures in polished bronze (Harmonic Oscillators I–IV, each in an edition of 15) and a larger work in white-patinated bronze (Harmonic Oscillator IVa, edition of 5).
